A Civil War story: Michael Heiman

Support the History Center during this year’s Give Local York May 1-2 and join us in the work of collecting and sharing the stories of York County’s history. The giving starts at 9 p.m. May 1 and continues online for 24 hours. Your gifts will help us care for our artifacts and offer free and low-cost programs for the community. Bookmark our giving page and come back on May 1 or 2 to donate! It’s 24 hours to make history. Let’s do this — together!
The History Center made live last month the new and improved version of our Civil War soldiers database. Thanks to decades of research by Dennis Brandt, we are able to provide information on thousands of soldiers from central Pennsylvania who fought in the Civil War.
Dennis’s work in this area started with his efforts to learn about an ancestor who, according to family legend, fought during the Civil War. He learned about the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, which drew its soldiers primarily from York and Adams counties.
To help you understand the rich information that Dennis uncovered, we will occasionally spotlight a few of the soldiers who spent part of their lives fighting in the most wrenching war in our history.
Today, our Civil War stories begins with Michael Heiman.
