Hop On…We’re Time Traveling!

The York County History Center will kick off the public phase of a $5 million capital campaign on Saturday, June 24, with a free, family-friendly event from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Colonial Complex, 157 W. Market St.
The project is centered on the goal of “Placing History at the Center,”  with all of the organization’s operations in one visitor-friendly location in the heart of a revitalized downtown York. The former Met-Ed Steam Generating Plant at 121 N. Pershing Avenue is the site of the future museum and library and archives, set to open in 2020.

 

The event will feature a day of Time Travel through the Revolutionary period, the Civil War, World War II, and more, with a spotlight on York County history! Be sure to pick up your “passport,” and get it stamped at each station—then collect your special gift at the end!

A sampling of the day’s activities:

  • Take a swing dance lesson with Brennan DeVoe
  • Enjoy Civil War music by Antoine Watts and Crystal Kemp
  • Meet and greet the Marquis de Lafayette
  • Get your history on with York Trivia
  • Try your hand at Hoop Rolling, Cup and Ball, and Nine Pins games
  • Meet the Kittatinny Associators and take a selfie with their colonial chickens!
  • Experience “Crime & Punishment:” you’ll end up in the pillory!
  • Get a taste of genealogy research at our ancestry.com station
  • See our 1911 Hart-Craft truck
  • Connect with York’s baseball history at our pitching cage
  • Test your York Trivia knowledge in The Ultimate History Nerd Competition
  • Take a selfie with Ben Franklin
  • See artisan craftsmen doing wood carving, chair caning, and spinning
  • Meet a Civil War surgeon

Catch our Pop-Up Tattoo Exhibit

During the Kickoff, stop by Marketview Arts and see our Pop-Up Exhibit on the history of tattooing!  It features the art and artifacts of Ray Miller, a York tattoo artist in the 1930s and 40s. His tools and flashes are now part of the History Center collection, and the exhibit is free! (37 W. Phila. St.) The exhibit runs from June 22-July 8.
