York, Pa. – The York County History Center was one of more than 30 organizations around the country to receive a grant award from Americana Corner, an online resource to help citizens rediscover America’s incredible founding and first century of expansion.

These Preserving America grants will help fund a diverse range of projects. The History Center received $10,000 to repair the historic chinking and repoint the basement masonry of the Plough Tavern and Gates House.

“These historic properties are the heart of the work we do,” said History Center President and CEO Benjamin Neely. “Taking care of them for future generations is expensive work. Grants from organizations such as Americana Corner are an important source of funding for us. We’re grateful they saw the value in helping us care for the Gates House and the Plough Tavern, especially in this year celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. We want our guests to see these buildings at their best.”

The General Horatio Gates House and the Golden Plough Tavern are restored buildings standing where they were originally built in the 1740s. The Gates House is named for General Horatio Gates, who stayed in the house during the harsh winter of 1777-78, a critical period of the American Revolution. The Plough Tavern provides visitors with the opportunity to experience colonial life firsthand.

Tom Hand, founder of Americana Corner, released the names of award recipients Feb. 22.

“I am thrilled to help others across the country share the remarkable story of America,” Hand said.

The Preserving America Grant Program was established to help other organizations tell the incredible story of America from its founding era through its first century as a nation. Other organizations to receive funding this year include the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park & Campaign and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
