In 1824, American Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette visited the United States of America for a Grand Tour of all 24 states, including a historic visit to York. Join public historian Elizabeth Reese in a lecture follow's Lafayette's tour, highlighting the important people, events, and legacy of America's favorite fighting Frenchman.
Our event will begin in Continental Square with a procession down Market Street to the Colonial Complex and ending at the History Center for brief remarks, a pop up display of Lafayette related artifacts and light refreshments. Come dressed for the weather and ready to hear from Lafayette during a recreation of his 1825 toast.
Due to his love of history Michael Maloney started writing books. His latest book Rattlesnake Colonel: Thomas Cresap An American Paradox will be the focus of our Second Saturday program in May. Rattlesnake Colonel covers the contradictory and often controversial life of Thomas Cresap.
In between shopping at artisan stalls during Yorkfest stop by the Colonial Courthouse to learn about York's connection to the American Revolution. The open house will only be Saturday, August 30 of Yorkfest.
See a 45-minute preview of Ken Burns' new documentary film series, "The American Revolution." The screening will be followed by a panel discussion hosted by Scott LaMar and featuring three Revolutionary period historians.
