A Building Rooted in Transformation

The new History Center Museum, Library and Archives is in the heart of downtown York, next to the Rail Trail and one block from Central Market and the shops and restaurants on Beaver Street.

The main entrance to the new building is from North Pershing Avenue, near the intersection with Philadelphia Street.

Reddy Kilowatt, one of our best-known industrial artifacts, is mounted on the two-story glass wall at the back of the lobby.

A refurbished Conestoga Wagon occupies a prominent place just inside the entrance to the first floor of the exhibit.

Visitors to the new museum will be able to see a fully operational A-frame Ammonia Compressor from both the first floor and the mezzanine.

The new Library space on the first floor will feature electrified tables for visitors to plug in laptops while they do research.

The multipurpose room on the third floor, with its sweeping views of York, will offer a special space for meetings, weddings, family reunions and other events.

Exhibit Spotlight

The Conestoga Wagon,
one of the History Center’s best-known artifacts, was moved to its home in the new York County History Center museum in February. The wagon was the primary mode of transporting commercial goods to markets in Colonial America and played a key role in the young nation’s westward expansion.
