York Civil War Roundtable

The next York Civil War Roundtable will be October 21, 2026 at 7:00 pm.  Dr. Charles C. Fennell, Jr. will present “Culp’s Hill and Little Round Top: A Tale of Two Restorations.”

This program will be in person and available on Zoom.

Gettysburg is the story of three hills: Culp’s Hill, Cemetery Hill, and Little Round Top.

Recently the National Park Service conducted restoration projects on two of these hills, Culps’s Hill and Little Round Top. This presentation will look at these two restoration projects to see what impact was made for the visitor when visiting the battlefield as well as enhancing the visitor’s understanding of the fighting that occurred there during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Charlie Fennell was born in Western Pennsylvania just north of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River. He became interested in the American Civil War during the Centennial in the 1960’s. He made his first pilgrimage to Gettysburg in 1964 as an eleven year old and he always hoped he could return there someday. Charlie turned his youthful exuberance for the Civil War into a professional passion. He has received three higher education degrees, all in American History with his final degree being a PhD in History from West Virginia University in 1992. His dissertation topic was “The Attack and Defense of Culp’s Hill: George Sears Greene’s  Brigade at Gettysburg.”

After retiring from teaching at the college level for forty-one years he continues to pursue his passion as a Licensed Battlefield Guide at the Gettysburg National Military Park, a position he has had for forty years years. Charlie and Joleen, his wife of forty-six years live in Hanover, Pennsylvania, where they raised three children. Charlie is happy to let you know he has returned to Gettysburg and spends two-thirds of the days of the year there. Life is good.
