Description
In its day, the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad was one of the most significant railroads on the Eastern Seaboard, forming the backbone of service between New York City and Washington, D.C. Detective Allan Pinkerton rerouted President-elect Abraham Lincoln on a midnight trip from Philadelphia to Baltimore on the PW&B upon hearing news of a possible assassination plot. Confederate raiders periodically attacked the PW&B, burning vital bridges in Maryland. More troops and supplies for the Army of the Potomac traveled over the line than on any other Northern railroad. Actor John Wilkes Booth frequently used the trains to reach his theater appearances; one of his last trips before he assassinated Lincoln was to see his sister in Philadelphia, perhaps to say goodbye. Come join multiple award-winning author Scott Mingus as he presents a PowerPoint talk on the PW&B during the Civil War years.
