Washington’s Soldiers

September 30, 2017, on the grounds of the York County History Center’s Colonial Complex at 157 West Market Street, join the Continental Army as a soldier during the Revolutionary War. Reenactors will portray General Washington and his officers , who will muster in new recruits at 10:00 am by having them sign a pledge to serve as commanded for the required time (which in this case is until 3:00 pm.)  Troops will be taught how to make musket balls, and will be supervised in making one to take home. They will then be issued a (wooden) musket and taught how to load and fire it. Once the officers see who are reasonably proficient, they will promote Sergeants and Corporals from the ranks, who will be given epaulettes appropriate to their station. The new officers will take over drilling the soldiers under the watchful eyes of their superior officers. Troops will then be divided into two equal groups and conclude their service by conducting a mock skirmish.

Washington’s Soldiers is created and conducted by the Kittatinny Associators, and is designed for youth ages 10-14. Cost is $7.50 for members, $10.00 for non members. Pre-registration is required, though payment can be made upon arrival on day of event.  Register by contacting Dara Kane at dkane@yorkhistorycenter.org or by calling 717-848-1587, ext 401.
