DESCRIPTION:Before the painting of Lafayette’s toast could hang in our new “Revolutionary York” exhibit\, it needed rescuing. Conservator Kenya Brown Feeser spent countless hours bringing the portrait back to life. At October’s Second Saturday\, she’ll take you behind the scenes of that painstaking work and the career that prepared her for it. Reserve your spot today. \nAbout our Speaker:\nBaltimore native Kenya Brown Feeser found in art conservation a career that brings together her two passions: art history and science. \nAfter earning a second bachelor’s degree\, in art history\, from Hood College in Frederick\, Maryland\, she moved to Florence\, Italy\, in 2006 to study conservation at Studio Art Centers International. She returned to the U.S. as lead conservator of the Jamestown Project at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. There she directed a team of conservators and volunteers in treating 42\,500 metal\, wood and ceramic objects. Later\, with the National Park Service at Jamestown\, she helped catalog objects from Green Spring Plantation. \nShe went back to Italy to earn a master’s degree in conservation science from the University of Bologna. Her thesis was a collaboration among Duke University\, Hood College and the University of Florence. It characterized cleaning protocols using Er:YAG lasers and studied pigment effects in the work of Paul Cézanne\, drawing on research at Duke\, French science laboratories\, Italy’s National Research Council in Florence and Hood’s chemistry department. \nHer most notable projects include: \n\nCaravaggio’s “St. Jerome Writing”\nthe restoration of the Edgar Allan Poe statue at the University of Baltimore\nthe Boy Scout Memorial in President’s Park near the White House\nthe completion of the National Park Service’s Jamestown archaeological conservation project\n\nCloser to home\, Kenya served nine years on the York County History Center’s board of directors and remains chair of the History Center’s Collections Committee. She has restored several 19th-century paintings\, ceramics and engravings for the History Center\, including works in the “Revolutionary York” exhibit\, among them the painting of Lafayette’s toast. She has also worked for the Crispus Attucks York History and Culture Center and the Spring Grove Area Historical Society\, and she has consulted on the Hanover Area Historical Society’s collection. \nOutside the lab\, she chaired the Spring Garden Township Police Department Advisory Board from 2021 to 2025. She has also volunteered for five years teaching theological studies at the York County Correctional Facility.

DESCRIPTION:On October 15 at 6:30 p.m. Jay Davidson will discuss his recently published book Young Lewis Miller: A Boy’s Life in the 1800s.  The book is available for purchase at the History Center and through our online store here. Jay will sign copies of his book following the presentation. \nRegistration recommended. \nWhat was it like to be a young boy growing up in the early 1800s in York? Author Jay Davidson helps answer that question in the new book he wrote and edited Young Lewis Miller\, A Boy’s Life in the 1800s. Readers can follow Lewis Miller’s drawings as he grows from a 3-year-old boy to a 21-year-old young adult in this richly illustrated book. Published by the York County History Center and timed for the nation’s 250th anniversary\, the book is aimed at young readers with the hope that it will bring this noted York County folk artist’s work to new generations. \nJames Latimer (Jay) Davidson grew up in York. His banking career took him from Manhattan to Hong Kong\, Boston and Beijing. Now living in Southern California\, his interest in genealogy has led to a renewed appreciation of the art and history of York County.

DESCRIPTION:The next York Civil War Roundtable will be October 21\, 2026 at 7:00 pm.  Dr. Charles C. Fennell\, Jr. will present “Culp’s Hill and Little Round Top: A Tale of Two Restorations.” \nThis program will be in person and available on Zoom. \nIn-Person Registration \nZoom Registration \nGettysburg is the story of three hills: Culp’s Hill\, Cemetery Hill\, and Little Round Top. \nRecently the National Park Service conducted restoration projects on two of these hills\, Culps’s Hill and Little Round Top. This presentation will look at these two restoration projects to see what impact was made for the visitor when visiting the battlefield as well as enhancing the visitor’s understanding of the fighting that occurred there during the Battle of Gettysburg. \nCharlie Fennell was born in Western Pennsylvania just north of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River. He became interested in the American Civil War during the Centennial in the 1960’s. He made his first pilgrimage to Gettysburg in 1964 as an eleven year old and he always hoped he could return there someday. Charlie turned his youthful exuberance for the Civil War into a professional passion. He has received three higher education degrees\, all in American History with his final degree being a PhD in History from West Virginia University in 1992. His dissertation topic was “The Attack and Defense of Culp’s Hill: George Sears Greene’s  Brigade at Gettysburg.” \nAfter retiring from teaching at the college level for forty-one years he continues to pursue his passion as a Licensed Battlefield Guide at the Gettysburg National Military Park\, a position he has had for forty years years. Charlie and Joleen\, his wife of forty-six years live in Hanover\, Pennsylvania\, where they raised three children. Charlie is happy to let you know he has returned to Gettysburg and spends two-thirds of the days of the year there.
