DESCRIPTION:On October 15 at 6:30 p.m. Jay Davidson will discuss his recently published book Young Lewis Miller: A Boy’s Life in the 1800s.  The book is available for purchase at the History Center and at yorkhistorycenter.org. Jay will sign copies of his book following the presentation. \nRegistration recommended. \nWhat was it like to be a young boy growing up in the early 1800s in York? Author Jay Davidson helps answer that question in the new book he wrote and edited Young Lewis Miller\, A Boy’s Life in the 1800s. Readers can follow Lewis Miller’s drawings as he grows from a 3-year-old boy to a 21-year-old young adult in this richly illustrated book. Published by the York County History Center and timed for the nation’s 250th anniversary\, the book is aimed at young readers with the hope that it will bring this noted York County folk artist’s work to new generations. \nJames Latimer (Jay) Davidson grew up in York. His banking career took him from Manhattan to Hong Kong\, Boston and Beijing. Now living in Southern California\, his interest in genealogy has led to a renewed appreciation of the art and history of York County.

SUMMARY:York Civil War Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:The next York Civil War Roundtable will be October 21\, 2026 at 7:00 pm.  Dr. Charles C. Fennell\, Jr. will present “Culp’s Hill and Little Round Top: A Tale of Two Restorations.” \nThis program will be in person and available on Zoom. \nGettysburg is the story of three hills: Culp’s Hill\, Cemetery Hill\, and Little Round Top. \nRecently the National Park Service conducted restoration projects on two of these hills\, Culps’s Hill and Little Round Top. This presentation will look at these two restoration projects to see what impact was made for the visitor when visiting the battlefield as well as enhancing the visitor’s understanding of the fighting that occurred there during the Battle of Gettysburg. \nCharlie Fennell was born in Western Pennsylvania just north of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River. He became interested in the American Civil War during the Centennial in the 1960’s. He made his first pilgrimage to Gettysburg in 1964 as an eleven year old and he always hoped he could return there someday. Charlie turned his youthful exuberance for the Civil War into a professional passion. He has received three higher education degrees\, all in American History with his final degree being a PhD in History from West Virginia University in 1992. His dissertation topic was “The Attack and Defense of Culp’s Hill: George Sears Greene’s  Brigade at Gettysburg.” \nAfter retiring from teaching at the college level for forty-one years he continues to pursue his passion as a Licensed Battlefield Guide at the Gettysburg National Military Park\, a position he has had for forty years years. Charlie and Joleen\, his wife of forty-six years live in Hanover\, Pennsylvania\, where they raised three children. Charlie is happy to let you know he has returned to Gettysburg and spends two-thirds of the days of the year there.
