SUMMARY:The Preachers\, The People\, and The Praise
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the York County History Center for an inspiring presentation on the remarkable history of York’s Black Churches and their profound role in shaping social change. From the late 18th century to modern times\, the Black Church has stood as a beacon of hope\, education\, and justice. In York\, PA\, these churches were more than places of worship—they were classrooms for children\, centers for life skills and job training\, and sanctuaries where the fight for equality was championed. \nLed by Samantha Dorm\, this presentation will share powerful stories of the Preachers\, the People\, and The Praise tied to the founding and legacy of Small Memorial A.M.E. Zion\, Faith Presbyterian\, Shiloh Baptist\, and the impactful work of the Black Ministers Association. Many of these stories are preserved in the History Center’s exhibits and archives.

SUMMARY:Civil War Roundtable\, February
DESCRIPTION:Between Fort Sumter and Appomattox\, Confederates bought and sold thousands of men\, women\, and children through a persistence trade in enslaved people. These transactions had profound impacts on the enslaved\, their lives and families\, and the ways in which they pursued — or did not pursue — freedom during the war. Robert K. D. Colby\, assistant professor of history at the University of Mississippi\, brings these stories to light at the February Roundtable (ZOOM ONLY). The stories come from his first book\, “An Unholy Traffic: Slave Trading in the Civil War South\,” published in 2024 by Oxford University Press. \nFind Professor Colby’s book on Amazon. \nThis is an online Zoom program only. If you have any difficulty registering\, please contact Nicole Smith at nsmith@yorkhistorycenter.org.  \nGo back to the Civil War Roundtable program page.
