SUMMARY:York Civil War Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:On November 18\, 2026 at 7:00 pm. Joshua Claybourn will present “Lincoln’s Compass: The Declaration of Independence and the American Idea” \nThis program will be in person and available on Zoom.  \nIn-Person Registration \nZoom Registration \nThis presentation with Joshua Claybourn will explore Abraham Lincoln’s remarkable relationship with the Declaration of Independence.  From his frontier youth in Kentucky and Indiana to the crucible of the Civil War\, Lincoln treated the Declaration as a living compass\, pointing the nation toward human equality\, democratic consent\, and respect for the rule of law. \nLincoln returned again and again to the Declaration’s promise that all are created equal\, using it to measure laws\, judge compromises\, and steady the republic in its darkest hour.  Blending history\, biography\, and reflection\, Claybourn portrays Lincoln as a shrewd politician and a moral thinker\, one whose clarity about America’s founding principles still speaks powerfully to us today. \nJoshua Claybourn is an attorney and historian specializing in Abraham Lincoln.  His debut book\, Lincoln’s Compass: The Declaration of Independence and the American Idea (Bloomsbury\, 2026) traces Lincoln’s life through the moral idea that guided him above all others: the Declaration of Independence.  He is also under contract with the University of Illinois Press to co-write\, with historian William Bartelt\, a comprehensive history of Lincoln’s formative years\, from birth to age twenty-one.  He has previously edited volumes on Lincoln’s Indiana years and on American national identity. Claybourn is president of the Abraham Lincoln Association and a board member of the Abraham Lincoln Institute.  He hosts the podcast Lincoln Log\, where he speaks with prominent historians\, and contributed his expertise to CNN’s six-part documentary “Lincoln: Divided We Stand.” \nNext Program – January 20\, 2027

SUMMARY:Writers' Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:The next Writers’ Roundtable meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday\, December 3.  Simon Bronner\, retired professor of American Studies at Penn State Harrisburg\, will present “How York Barbell changed York County and American life.” \nThis program will be available in person and on Zoom.  Registration coming soon. \nThe York Barbell Company\, founded in 1932 by Robert “Bob” Hoffman (1898-1985) in York\, has been recognized for its pivotal role in the development of strength athletics globally. Previous historical writing such as the work of John D. Fair has centered on the biography and driving vision of Hoffman\, particularly the ways that his personality and views on national pride\, “manly culture\,” and health were manifested in his promotion of weightlifting as a sport and lifestyle. \nAs part of Simon Bronner’s research including material at the York County History Center\, Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sport\, and the Smithsonian Institution for the book Muscle! Power! Sex! The Strongman in Physical\, Material\, and Political Culture\,  he shifts the analysis to the impact of York’s products and programs\, particularly in North America\, on moving exercise from a public to domestic pursuit\, and in the process creating a sociopolitical as well as physical definition of the “strongman.” In this presentation\, he discusses his pursuit of evidence of the York Barbell Company (and “Club”) and its setting the narrative for the book. \nSimon J. Bronner\, Ph.D.\, is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at both the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, where he served as Dean\, and the Pennsylvania State University\, Harrisburg\, where he chaired the American Studies Program and directed the School of Humanities. The author of over 40 books\, recent titles include Folklore and Ethnology in the Modern World (2025) and Americanness: Inquiries into the Thought and Culture of the United States for Routledge (2021). \n
