DESCRIPTION:The World War II Briefings program for August coincides with the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II. Featured speakers include World War II Veteran Anthony Stabile\, Stephen H. Smith\, a well-known author and speaker on a range of York County history topics; and Dominish Marie Miller\, founder of Preserving the History of Newberrytown\, author of three local history books and a historical re-enactor. Anthony will speak about his World War II experiences\, Steve presents York’s connection to the Manhattan Project and Dominish presents Women of World War II.

DESCRIPTION:When the British captured Philadelphia in the fall of 1777\, the Continental Congress made York the capital from which it would conduct the war\, and take the first step toward creating the United States as we know it. Guides will share stories of local heroes\, as well as national notables such as George Washington\, and “Mad” Anthony Wayne. Included in this tour is the site of a duel that was to take place between General Horatio Gates and James Wilkinson. \n  \nTours will kick off from the History Center Museum. SUMMARY:Revolutionary Thinkers Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:Calling all 4th – 6th graders who love history! The York County History Center is proud to offer a brand-new day camp this summer! \nIn advance of America’s 250th celebration next year\, the History Center’s Revolutionary Thinkers Summer Camp will explore how the core founding documents of the Articles of Confederation\, the US Constitution\, and the Declaration of Independence helped shape the nation we know today. This camp is an opportunity to fan emerging sparks of interest with fun activities that include learning about our nation’s founding and being immersed in our local history through hands-on programs. Students will learn about 18th-century life\, tour local historic sites\, and embark on a journey that will help them understand and appreciate civics education in an experiential and fun setting. \nThe camp runs daily 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday\, Aug. 4-8. All students are welcome\, but preference will be given to students in York County schools. SUMMARY:From Militia to National Guard
DESCRIPTION:The National Guard of Pennsylvania History Project will be tabling in the lobby of the History Center Museum on July 19. Come see the uniforms\, arms\, and equipment carried by the national guard during it’s early history\, and learn about the companies that called York County home. NGP History Project will have a display of artifacts from the years following the American Civil War up through WW1. The artifacts on display on the 19th are representative of those used by the Pennsylvania National Guard in garrison\, in the field\, as well as aboard ships in the Pennsylvania Naval Militia. \n  \nThis not a presentation\, it is an opportunity to chat and engage with members of the NGP History Project in an informal setting. Additionally this is free and does not include museum admission. \n  \nBRAND NEW in 2025\, the NGP History Project will be assisting visitors with researching family members who may have served in the National Guard from the 1700s up through WW1. SUMMARY:York Civil War Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:This program will be held in-person and on Zoom.  Registration is recommended. \nIn Person registration \nZoom registration \nSoldiers in the American Revolution and the Civil War marched across York County’s soil\, something that few regions north of the Mason-Dixon Line can point to. What are the local connections between the two wars\, separated by about 85 years? James McClure will talk about links between these two significant wars in two different centuries at May’s meeting of the York Civil War Roundtable\, a topic with relevancy on the eve of the 250th anniversaries of the Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation. \nJames McClure is a retired editor of the York Daily Record/York Sunday News\, after serving in leadership positions at the news organization for more than 30 years. In that time\, he also served as USA Today Network’s state editor for Pennsylvania\, Delaware and Maryland\, overseeing six daily newsrooms. He previously served as East Region editor for Digital First Media with oversight of 24 daily newsrooms. He was senior on-site editor for coverage of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown\, Connecticut\, and the Boston Marathon bombing. He is the author or co-author of 10 books on York County history\, including works on the American Revolution\, Civil War and World War II. In 2025\, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Hall of Fame. DESCRIPTION:Speakers will include Richard Robinson\, Tina Charles\, and Veteran Frank Cohn. \nThis session will highlight veterans stories and liberation of Dachau. \nPlease note some intense and serious themes. \nTina Charles \nMs. Charles has a deep-rooted passion for genealogy. Through that passion she has shed light on many folks who have been overlooked by history. In her presentation she focuses on Black Veterans from York. \nCol. Frank Cohn \nFrom fleeing with his family from Nazi persecution to serving with 12th US Army Group Intelligence\, Frank Cohn has a great story to tell. After WWII\, he stayed in the Army\, retiring a Colonel. \nRichard Robinson \nMr. Robinson has studied the General Jacob Devers Collection at the History Center while preparing an exhaustive new biography. He will speak on Devers’ liberation of the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau and rescue of Allied POWs.

DESCRIPTION:Dominish Marie Miller will present “The Not So Invisible Women: The Daughters of Charity: Contributions during and after the Battle of Gettysburg.” \nThis program is in-person and available on Zoom. \nIn-Person Registration \nZoom Registration \nMore than 230 Daughters of Charity\, Catholic sisters\, served as nurses during the American Civil War. Gettysburg’s close proximity to Emmitsburg\, Maryland\, about 10 miles\, allowed the Daughters of Charity to step into the spotlight and leave a lasting mark on the town. Please join us for Women’s History Month as we learn about the only trained nurses at the start of the Civil War. \nDominish Marie Miller is the Third Circuit Court of Appeals Librarian for the Middle District of Pennsylvania\, the founder of Preserving the History of Newberrytown\, and runs the Lewisberry Area History Lovers group. She serves as Librarian and Volunteer Information Specialist (VIS) Chair for the Harrisburg Chapter\, NSDAR and is a founding board member of the Newberrytown Special Events Committee. \nDominish is also a reenactor with the 87th Regiment\, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry\, Company C where she portrays a private. She is the author of two cookbooks\, “Preserving the History of Newberrytown: A Community Cookbook From the Cooks of Newberrytown\, Pennsylvania\,” 2021\, volumes 1 and 2. Also\, authored “ Preserving the History of Newberrytown Then and Now: A Pictorial View Of A Changing Town.” \nUpcoming Programs \nApril 16\, 2025  – Cody Eash – “If It Takes Three Years More: Lincoln at the Sanitary Fairs of 1864”
