The History Center Museum holds many stories and artifacts\, Family Day-Black History Month will allow attendees a chance to explore York’s Black history through hands on activities in our lobby and galleries. \nActivities for the day\n\nStorytime– Books selected from York County Libraries\, visit their website to reserve books.\nHit it out of the park– Learn about York’s baseball history and the Black community when you make your own paper plate baseball.\nScavenger Hunt– Visit the galleries to discover national and local stories tied to the accomplishments of the Black community.\nHistory Maker Matching– Match the York History Maker with their life story.\nSpecial guests– Friends of Lebanon Cemetery will be in the lobby with a children’s activity.\nMore activities\n\nChildren may not be left unattended when taking part in the activities. \nActivities available while supplies last.

DESCRIPTION:Author Michael C. Harris joins us for our first Second Saturday of 2026 to present and sign copies of his new book\, Fighting for Philadelphia. Kick start your America250 celebrations when you attend Second Saturday on January 10\, 2026. \nMichael C. Harris is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington and the American Military University. He has worked for the National Park Service in Fredericksburg\, Virginia\, Fort Mott State Park in New Jersey\, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission at Brandywine Battlefield. Mike has conducted tours and staff rides of many of the East Coast battlefields and is certified and currently teaches in the Philadelphia region. He lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Michelle and son Nathanael. His first book\, Brandywine\, was awarded the American Revolution Round Table of Richmond Book Award in 2014.

Join us Thursday\, Nov. 6\, for an evening of history\, insight and conversation.\nFollowing the preview screening\, Scott Lamar\, former host of WITF’s “Smart Talk” and “The Spark\,” will lead a panel of expert historians through an engaging and thoughtful conversation about the people and events that changed the course of history.\nPre-registration is required to attend. DESCRIPTION:Shippensburg University’s Dr. Allen Dieterich-Ward will give a talk based on his book\, Cradle of Conservation An Environmental History of Pennsylvania\, which explores the state’s “working landscapes” from William Penn’s famous exhortation to “leave one acre of trees for every five acres cleared” to the ratification of the Environmental Rights Amendment and today’s debates over fracking and the threat of climate change.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

SUMMARY:From Militia to National Guard
DESCRIPTION:The National Guard of Pennsylvania History Project will be tabling in the lobby of the History Center Museum on July 19. Come see the uniforms\, arms\, and equipment carried by the national guard during it’s early history\, and learn about the companies that called York County home. NGP History Project will have a display of artifacts from the years following the American Civil War up through WW1. The artifacts on display on the 19th are representative of those used by the Pennsylvania National Guard in garrison\, in the field\, as well as aboard ships in the Pennsylvania Naval Militia. \n  \nThis not a presentation\, it is an opportunity to chat and engage with members of the NGP History Project in an informal setting. Additionally this is free and does not include museum admission. \n  \nBRAND NEW in 2025\, the NGP History Project will be assisting visitors with researching family members who may have served in the National Guard from the 1700s up through WW1. DESCRIPTION:Ron Kirkwood\, author of two books on Gettysburg’s George Spangler farm\, visits the Roundtable in January to talk about his most recent book on the Spangler Farm\, “Tell Mother Not to Worry.” Ron will discuss the stories of the battle’s aftermath\, many of them previously untold\, that shaped the lives of soldiers\, surgeons and the area’s families. ZOOM ONLY. \nFounded as the White Rose Civil War Round Table\, the York CWRT holds monthly meetings the third Wednesday of every month except December at 7:00 p.m. at the York County History Center now at 121 N. Pershing Ave. in York\, Pennsylvania. There is free parking behind the building. Each meeting features a guest speaker talking about a Civil War topic of local or national interest. Meetings are FREE and open to the public. \nThe York Civil War Round Table is a non-profit organization that seeks to promote\, interpret\, preserve\, and protect the Civil War heritage of York County\, Pennsylvania\, through the education and exchange of information with its members and the general public.
