DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Judy Grove and Cindy Pizziketti (Wallace Cross Mill docents)\n\nIn this session\, Judy Grove will highlight the historical significance and operations of the Wallace Cross Mill as it celebrates its bicentennial anniversary. Following this\, Cindy Pizziketti will share the story of the two Wallace sisters who ran the mill for 30 years. Having taken over operations during the Civil War\, the sisters were among the many unsung women who kept the country running during that era. Ms. Grove and Ms. Pizziketti will bring a portable corn sheller and allow attendees to grind wheat kernels. Some sweet treats will be provided by our presenters with buckwheat that was processed at the Wallace Cross Mill. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the work of the Wallace sisters\, mill docents\, and other who have contributed to maintaining the Wallace Cross Mill for 200 years.

DESCRIPTION:In January 1924\, in the middle of a snowstorm\, in the middle of the night\, four people\, two sets of strangers\, came together. Two were White; two were Black. Two were female; two were male. Two were steeped in religion; two were centered in astronomy. All were wishing for better relations between the races. What brought these strangers together? Was it a moon phase or a planetary shift or something deeper and farther away? \nJoin us February 21 to learn more about Miss Lydia’s Church written by Dr. Dorothy King. DESCRIPTION:Author Michael C. Harris joins us for our first Second Saturday of 2026 to present and sign copies of his new book\, Fighting for Philadelphia. Kick start your America250 celebrations when you attend Second Saturday on January 10\, 2026. \nMichael C. Harris is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington and the American Military University. He has worked for the National Park Service in Fredericksburg\, Virginia\, Fort Mott State Park in New Jersey\, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission at Brandywine Battlefield. Mike has conducted tours and staff rides of many of the East Coast battlefields and is certified and currently teaches in the Philadelphia region. He lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Michelle and son Nathanael. His first book\, Brandywine\, was awarded the American Revolution Round Table of Richmond Book Award in 2014.

DESCRIPTION:An evening with York County History Storytellers is a gathering of history-minded people who love sharing stories. \nTonight’s program is SOLD OUT! \nOur American democracy is worth fighting for\, and it has been since 1776. That struggle has produced heroes\, all worthy. It has spawned foes – some with good intentions\, others certainly not. Indeed\, you could say the York County experience with our American democracy has ranged from heroes to zeros. Historians participating in the York County History Storytellers evening are returning to explore what has worked in York County’s history and those times that we’ve fallen short. As a county\, we can learn from both. \nThe program starts at 6:30 p.m.\, Dec. 11\, and will feature Ben Neely\, June Burk Lloyd\, Samantha Dorm\, Jeri Jones\, Scott Mingus and Stephen H. Smith. Doors open at 5:30 pm for those who wish to explore the museum for free prior to the event. \nHometown History’s Jamie Noerpel and Dominish Marie Miller will host the evening. Jim McClure will preside at the popular “Stump the Historian” segment. \nProgram in collaboration with the York Daily Record and Hometown History.

DESCRIPTION:November 8 is International STEAM day! Join us as we welcome Tom Ort to present S. Morgan Smith and the York\, PA Hydropower Legacy. Hydropower research\, development\, and manufacturing has been anchored in York\, Pennsylvania for over 150 years. Spearheaded by minister-turned-Industrialist S. Morgan Smith\, hydraulic products produced in York have been placed in operation in every corner of the Earth. In recognition of International STEAM Day\, the hydropower legacy and its effects on York\, the Nation\, and the world will be explored. \n  \nTom Ort is a Mechanical Engineer at Voith Hydro in York\, PA where he designs hydraulic turbine equipment used in facilities around the world. He earned his bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and master’s in Engineering Science from Penn State. A native of York\, Tom has a strong interest in local industrial history.

Suggested donation of $5 in cash\, or card. \nPLUS: Family fun fall crafts in the lobby!  Kids get to create their own creature made from craft supplies and toilet paper tubes. In addition families can decorate their own Halloween mask as they learn about the history of Halloween costumes. This activity was made possible in part by a Downtown Inc First Friday Grant\, sponsored by WellSpan Health. (Activity will take place from 5 pm until 7:30 while supplies last.)

The York County History Center is proud to offer a brand-new day camp this summer! \nIn advance of America’s 250th celebration next year\, the History Center’s Revolutionary Thinkers Summer Camp will explore how the core founding documents of the Articles of Confederation\, the US Constitution\, and the Declaration of Independence helped shape the nation we know today. This camp is an opportunity to fan emerging sparks of interest with fun activities that include learning about our nation’s founding and being immersed in our local history through hands-on programs. Students will learn about 18th-century life\, tour local historic sites\, and embark on a journey that will help them understand and appreciate civics education in an experiential and fun setting. \nThe camp runs daily 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday\, Aug. 4-8. All students are welcome\, but preference will be given to students in York County schools.
