Trailblazers: Four Women’s Journey Across America
This story map presents the remarkable journey of four women from York County who drove from York to Los Angeles and back during the summer of 1938. Harriet, Beatrice, and Margaret Hively and their friend Angie drove across the American Southwest heading to L.A. and took a more northerly route home passing through Wyoming and South Dakota. Over the course of their travels they drove through 21 states and covered 9,000 miles. They burned 573 gallons of gas at a total cost of $111, with prices ranging from $.16-.27 per gallon.
